"Virgin" soles & "cream" polish

I love the expression "virgin soles." On the surface, it implies that a fellow has never taken a step in his shoes. But the virginity points to other uses, other acts. The feet-on-the-desk pose always suggests both decadent corporate leisure and vulnerability, as though the executive is offering up the pristine leather soles of his shoes for someone else to service, or tempting someone with a tantalizing sight. Shoes are erotic because feet are erotic: the vulnerability of the foot armored by the luxurious gleam of leather, a sheath sealed by tassels or lace, patent or cordovan. The aroma of shoe polish is an aphrodisiac, too: the acrid, turpentine odor of military shoe polish, the cedar of shoe trees, or the fragrant beeswax of Saphir cream polishes. The swish of the brush, or the blur of the buffing cloth, repetitive movements suggesting other forms of attention, other forms of worship, lavishing attention on these garments meant to draw attention to the feet.
