“Ok, Zev, just take a nice deep breath in for me,” instructs tonight’s entertainer, putting his hand on my shoulder, “and as you breath out, begin to notice that the spot you have chosen to focus on is starting to become just a bit blurrier, harder to focus on. Very good, Zev…”
I’ll be honest, this is not where I had seen my evening going. When my friend Yosef told me he wanted to surprise me for my bachelor’s party, I thought he was gonna hire a stripper or something. Guess it wouldn’t have been much of a surprise if I had been right though, huh? Still not sure what part of tonight’s activity necessitated the formal dress Yosef had requested of us. It was one thing for the hypnotist, a young man around my age or maybe a tad younger, to be all dressed up. He’s the entertainment after all. But isn’t the whole point of this hypnosis stuff to be relaxed and comfortable?
“As you maintain that breathing pattern, allow yourself to just relax. Allow each breath to remove more tension from your body, more stresses to simply melt away,” the hypnotist continues. “Gooood. With each word I say, let your vision grow more hazy, let your eyelids become more heavy.” His hand still firmly on my shoulder, the man begins to slowly loosen me up with slight pushes and pulls.
My fiance Avi’s gonna get a real kick out of this when I tell him about it. I highly doubt his friends were this creative with his bachelor’s party tonight. Say what you want about my amazing husband-to-be, the man does not surround himself with people of… equal caliber.
“And with one more deep breath, allow your eyelids to grow irresistibly heavy,” the hypnotist says with a gentle droll. As I let that deep breath out, I feel the hand on my shoulder give a firm nudge and heard a quick snap as the hypnotist utters, “Sleep now.” My eyes close gently, my shoulders slack, I felt myself leaning against the hypnotist’s body for support. “Deeper and deeper, more and more completely relaxed. Allow each word I say to guide you further and further into a state of peaceful relaxation. Let it draw you deeper and deeper.” As the hypnotist continues, I feel my head give in to gravity’s pull, sinking along with the rest of my body into my chair and against the hypnotist’s body. I find myself shockingly cozy, given the whole suit and bowtie thing, but as the hypnotist keep talking, I just felt myself succumbing more and more to the easy comfort of the situation. “Very good. Now in a moment, Zev, I’m going to have you open your eyes, but know that any time I say the words ‘deep sleep,’ you can just allow yourself to sink even deeper than you are right now. Just nod your head as soon as you understand.” I gently nod my head, feeling my hair tussle against the hypnotist’s tuxedo. “Very good, Zev. One, feeling your energy return… Two, your body beginning to sit upright… And three, opening your eyes.” Just as instructed, I found myself sitting upright in my chair, my eyes slowly fluttering open and adjusting to the room’s lighting. I see my friends across from me, stifling their laughter at what what must be, I admit, the fairly silly site of their buddy taking a micro nap right in front of them. “How do you feel?” the hypnotist asks, looking down at me.
“Uhhh,” I pause, finding words slow to come to mind. “Relaxed, really.”
“Very good,” the man replies, putting his hand back on my shoulder. “Deep sleep now,” he commands, and I find myself suddenly returning to that loose, jelly-like comfort I had left mere moments ago. “Now Zev, in a moment you’re going to open your eyes, just like before, but I think you’ll find something quite peculiar happening this time. As soon as you’re sitting upright, you’re going to find that the collar around your neck feels strange, almost like it’s tickling you. The more you notice it, the more intense the tickling will feel. You may try to loosen your bowtie or undo the top button of your shirt, but the closer your hand gets to your neck, the more intense the tickling will become. Nod your head as soon as you understand.” I find myself once again nodding, and the hypnotist soon begins his count upward.
When the hypnotist reaches three, my eyes flutter open once again, this time to the sight of my friends, not giggling, but watching me intently as if they suspect I’m about to do something. I give an awkward little laugh, unsure what they’re expecting, when suddenly I’m acutely aware of the feeling of my collar on my neck. I tilt my head around, thinking it’s just one of those tingles that one gets randomly, but it just seems to be getting worse.
“Everything okay, Zev?” the entertainer asks, sporting a demeanor somewhere between concern and amusement.
“Yeah, just gotta readjust by bowt-” I begin, but as soon as I lift my hand to fix whatever’s going on with my shirt, it suddenly goes from a light tingle to an all-out flurry of tickles, and I burst into laughter. “AHAHAHA!” I holler, instinctively stiffening my shoulders against my neck, but that only seems to make it worse. I reach up, at this point ready to rip my shirt off need-be, but as I’m about to do so, the tickling gets so intense that I just completely tense up. “HAHA!” I yelp, as I feel a pair of hands grab my shoulder.
“Deep sleep now, deep sleep,” I hear the hypnotist’s familiar voice as I feel my body completely melting, the last of my laughs lost to one last sigh. “Veeery goood, returning right back to that wonderful state of calm and suggestibility. Now soon enough, you’ll open your eyes again, the tickling feeling of your collar completely gone. However, Zev, any time you hear me say your name, you’re going to notice the room feeling warmer and warmer. Every time I say Zev, you will feel as though someone has upped the thermostat, becoming more and more noticeable. Once again, just nod your head for me as soon as you understand.”
Pretty soon, my eyes are open and I hear the entertainer asking me a question. “I’m sorry, what?” I ask, having missed the man’s remarks. My friends all seem to be enjoying themselves, letting out heavy breaths, as one may do after a fit of laughter.
“I asked how you’re feeling, Zev,” the man repeats, flashing a handsome, knowing smirk, first to me, then the audience of my friends.
“Oh, ummm, good,” I respond, again finding myself at a loss for words. The room feels a tad stuffy, but I guess one can only expect as much in the dead of winter.
“You know Zev, your friend told me that you’re getting married soon,” the hypnotist continues, “Are you excited, Zev?” I blink a few times, thinking of Avi, the venue we picked, but pretty soon, I lose focus.
“Yeah, I mean…” I begin, starting to flap my hands toward my face. “Sorry, just,” I stutter further, “Sorry, does anyone else find it hot in here?” I ask, looking around to find support from my friends. They all seem to be laughing though. Not sure why.
“Sorry, Zev, not sure what you’re talking about…” the hypnotist retorts, himself seemingly giggling. I find myself wriggling in my seat, sweat percolating on my forehead. “You feeling ok, Zev?” the hypnotist inquires.
“I just need…” I trail off, taking off my suit jacket and tossing it aside. I lean back in my seat and start fanning myself more intensely.
“Zev?” the man asks, and I suddenly need to throw off all my clothing for some, any relief! Just as I begin unbuttoning my shirt, I hear a soft, “Deep sleep, Zev,” and I once again melt into an incredibly relaxed state, any distress immediately replaced with total comfort.
Pretty soon, I’m opening my eyes again, feeling quite refreshed. I notice my friends clapping and laughing, and the hypnotist taking his bows. I don’t quite understand what’s going on, why it seems like the show is over. Is the man really leaving us so soon?
“You’ve been excellent tonight, Zev,” the hypnotist says, returning to me. “You may go back to join your friends.” I stand up slowly, careful to not lose balance, still unsure why everything seems to be ending so quickly. Heading back to my friends, I’m quickly engulfed by the rowdy crowd.
“That was hilarious!” “Who knew you had that in you?” “I think I nearly pissed myself” I heard amongst the mixed cheers and jeers of my peers. I laugh politely, unsure exactly what they found so funny in that short display. After a little while of answering the guys’ questions, I spot Yosef waiting near the bathroom door, looking at me with a smirk. He gives his head a quick tilt backwards, indicating that I should excuse myself.
“Sorry fellas, if you’d just give me a moment,” I request, nudging my way out of the circle and toward Yosef. The two of us dip into the bathroom to get a bit of silence. “Wow, Yosef, gotta say, not sure what just happened, but the guys really seemed to get a kick out of tonight.” Yosef lets out a little laugh and humbly nods his head. Letting a beat of silence pass, Yosef puts a hand on my shoulder and looks me right in the eyes with a smirk on his face.
“Deep sleep, Zev,” he says, gently tugging my shoulder so that my head rests comfortably on his shoulder. “Very good, Zev, deeper and deeper. Returning to that wonderful state of suggestibility…” As he croons, Yosef caresses the back of my head, playing his fingers up and down through my hair. “Zev, when you get home to Avi tonight, before either of you even has the change to change out of your party clothing, you’re going to tell him just how wonderful an experience you had being hypnotized. You’ll be so eager to have him share in your enjoyment that you will ask him to let you try hypnotizing him. Do you understand so far?” I nod my head familiarly, happy to be so comfortable and relaxed. “Veeery good, Zev. You will know instinctively just how to put Zev under, mimicking all the techniques that have been used on you tonight, even those you don’t consciously remember. Is that clear?” I once again nod, enjoying the feeling of Yosef’s fingers on my head. “Wonderful, Zev. As soon as Avi is sufficiently entranced, you will find yourself eager to recommend coming to my apartment. You will make certain that you and Avi end up coming to my place tonight. Nod your head as soon as you understand.” I nod once more.
I blink a few times, feeling as though I’ve zoned out. “Zev?” Yosef probes, a look of bemusement on his face. “I asked if you enjoyed the party,”
“Oh yes, definitely! Are folks heading out now?” I ask, gathering myself. Seeing Yosef nod, I continue, saddened to see the night coming to an end, “Real shame that it’s winding down.”
“Don’t worry!” Yosef chuckles in reply, “There’s plenty more fun to be had. Maybe it’s best that you get your rest tonight though. Come, let me call you an uber so you can get home to Avi.”
“That would be great,” I reply, thinking excitedly about telling my husband-to-be all about tonight.
